ACNE VULGARIS:How To Prevent It.
68Acne vulgaris is a common skin problem characterized by blackheads, infection and much oiliness of the skin. Hyperactivity of the sebaceous or oil secreting glands of the skin gives rise to acne. This problem may be inherited or may come from the hormonal changes which takes place during adolescence. The condition maybe worsen by excess eating of fats and carbohydrates, poor personal hygiene and abuse of cosmetics.
Acne starts with excess secretion of the sebaceous gland. The tunnel via which the secretion (sebum) flows into the outer layer of the skin becomes filled with a combination of sebum, dust and dirt. The result is a blackhead. if the tunnel becomes completely sealed, the sebum backs up in the gland and becomes a fluid filled pocket or cyst. if the cyst becomes infected, pus forms in tlhe gland duct, and swellings may extend under the skin, creating a large, firm red nodule. Blackheads and diseased ducts are formed chiefly on the face and chest. Mild cases of acne varnishes without leaving any trace, but the severe cases leave pitted scars on the skin.
Medicated lotions and ointments are applied to soften the oily plugs, enlarge the glands opening and control superficial infection and excessive oiliness. Antibiotics and sulfonamides are used to control deep infections. A person suffering from acne is advised to wash his skin regularly with bland soap, take regular shampoos, and eliminate excess fatty foods, sweets and iodine from his foods.
